A history of the Chamber

Since 1909, Exeter has been committed to growing local businesses.
Before Exeter became a city, a group of business owners came together as the Board of Trade to advocate for services that were needed for everyone’s benefit. These services included watering and tamping down the sand-based streets, providing a water system for the businesses and community, and marketing to others to entice them to bring their businesses to the area.
In 1909, the predecessor of the Exeter Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Trade, held a Citrus Fair which attracted great crowds from not only the county but from far and wide. The fair was seen as an “unqualified success.” Since those early days, Exeter businesses have known what others are just now figuring out. In order to build a community you have to invest in it. The City, Chamber and Community work together to promote business. Many businesses, people & organizations have taken a role in Exeter’s rejuvenation, recapturing a sense of spirit and pride. We constantly seek amenities that add appeal to Exeter. Here you’ll find friendly residents and city leaders who contribute to local programs, participate in community events and shop local.
The Exeter Chamber of Commerce and the City of Exeter work together to encourage economic development and the community at large. We are a business organization of over 300 members representing Exeter, as well as many other local communities. Acting as the Exeter Visitor Center, we are happy to greet and serve the needs of tourists, newcomers, businesses and residents.
