Our chamber, our history
Part of Exeter's Story Since 1902
Before Exeter had a city government, it had a Board of Trade.
Organized in February 1902, the Exeter Board of Trade brought local business and community concerns to the table—from promoting the area’s fruit and grapes to working on street lighting, parks, and drainage. Even loose dogs needed attention.
Its stated purpose was “to work for the advancement of Exeter and the surrounding country.” That is where the story of the Exeter Chamber of Commerce begins.
Before Exeter Became a City
Exeter would not incorporate until 1911, nine years after the Board of Trade formed. During those years, the organization served as a link between Exeter and the Tulare County Board of Supervisors, bringing community concerns before the County.
Its involvement reached well beyond what we might expect of a Chamber today. Without a city government, Exeter relied on the County and local efforts to address community needs. The Board of Trade was part of that work during an important chapter in Exeter’s development.
The Board of Trade name was still in use in 1912, after incorporation. The organization’s history spans both sides of that milestone—from an unincorporated town to a newly established city.
From the Board of Trade to the Chamber
Established in 1921, the Exeter Chamber of Commerce has been part of community life for more than a century. Today, its work includes sharing local stories through Exeter News and helping businesses connect with customers and one another.
Other parts of Chamber life would look more familiar: gathering for a community celebration, introducing a new business, or working together on plans for the months ahead.
You’ll find the Chamber at the Wednesday Farmers Market, during Fall Festival, and on December evenings at the Exeter Downtown Open House—a hometown Exeter Christmas experience. Members, volunteers, Board members, and staff help make that work possible.
Our mission is to promote, support, and empower Exeter to prosper.
